Definition of Email Marketing?

It is a form of marketing in which a business is reaching their customers direct through electronic mail. The content was sent out via mass lists of existing and potential customers to make sure customers are aware of your business.

The information is sent out more like a laser-guided missile than a bomb: No matter what you’re selling, it is a way to reach thousands of potential customers directly at a relatively low cost when compared to advertising or other forms of media exposure. It brings your business’ message through an attractive mix of graphics, text and links directly to people who may have never heard of your business or considered your products, but are knowledgeable and interested in your business’ area of expertise.

There are two forms of email communications:

1. Email communication initiated by the consumer

This type of communication is when a customer sends an email to complain about a product bought, reviews and ask for details regarding a certain product and additionally, business will also reply their answer via email promptly. Email is the cheapest solution of the customer relationship management tactics (eCRM). However, the downfall for this method is that the service does not provide the opportunity to interact face to face realistically.

2. Email communication initiated by the company

This type of method is initiate by company in sending short message that call for action. Companies usually send a massive email to its existing customers to maintain the relationship with them, build buyer’s loyalty,  invitation for a special occasion or ‘one day pre-sale” for its loyal customers to show that the customer are valuable for the business.

In order to have successful campaign, the message has to be short and effective and address to a target, so turnover of responsive is also high. Usually in this email there a link to a landing page (usually is the website content of the message to convey).

Advantage of Email Marketing

  1. Segmentation and Targeting are at advantage as these strategies receive an extraordinary reasonings when using the form of marketing as campaign can be easily customized cater to their customers’ specific needs.

    2. Accumulated data of this email marketing campaign can be easily collected and measures by using social software- to show number of recipients and location.

So what’s the hype?

I will share you businesses that made their record-breaking marketing campaign to the viral lists starting with my personal favorite that will always be the Dove’s “Real Beauty Sketches” campaign. This brilliant heartfelt video has gained more than 114 million views during the first month. Dove launched the video in 25 languages out of its 33 official YouTube channels, reaching users in more than 110 countries. The golden three minutes video shows how women see themselves and what other people see them. According to facts cited by Dove, about 54% of women around the world have their “I hate my body” moment every day.

In this video, Gil Zamora, a FBI-trained forensic artist draws women individually in an empty floor apartment behind a white curtain, where those women were asked by Zamora few questions about their appearances. As those women describe their appearances to Zamora, he started to sketch it on the blank art paper accordingly based on the description given through their verbal communication. Beforehand, these women were asked to social with the other women in the room and were asked again by Zamora after to describe the other women that they talked to, and started to sketch it again.

This video is very powerful, as a result, Dove gained another 15,000 new subscribers in their YouTube’s channel the following months and about 3.8 million shares the first month. Before I spill everything and left you nothing about this video, I will share you the video now!

Other famous campaign that went viral would have to be the Evian’s “Roller Babies”. Danone started this campaign with purpose to promote its pure and young luxury water brand Evian. This video went viral and has reached more than 25 million views in less than two months and even made it to the Guinness World Records.

After that, Evian strikes again with its advertisement with “Baby & Me” featuring adult and babies stars with 50 million YouTube views and 100 million total views within weeks. Furthermore, Evian also launched its “Baby & Me” phone app that allow users to take “baby-fy” to expose inner child in them and shared it in their social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using Evian’s official hashtag #evianbabyandme. Cute!

Old Spice’s 2010 Campaign “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like”

Most successfuls viral marketing campaigns created by businesses are based on humor, interesting content, and interactivity (Emakina 2007, Phelps 2004). Another example taken from this article, is the famous Old Spice’s 2010 Campaign “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like”, that has becoming a textbook example of highly successful viral marketing and known for it powerful tagline “look at your man, now back to me” featuring ormer National Football League player Isaiah Mustafa (Sexton 2011). This ad makes people remember and hit a massive share of the video in social networks that gained a lot of attention. The original video of this marketing campaign has had nearly 40 million views within two years (YouTube 2010).

“It succeeded because Mustafa’s monologues revolve around an amusingly smug character delivering ridiculous, surrealistic, and breathless claims of purported benefits that come from using Old Spice products (Sexton 2011). The description below the video on YouTube captures the spirit of the commercial series: “[we’re] not saying this body wash will make your man smell into a romantic millionaire jet fighter pilot, but we are insinuating it” (YouTube 2010). This series of commercials has benefited consumers by entertaining them.”

It is extremely awesome how fast this viral marketing is spread across people especially through social network sites! Fast yet effective, win!

THE POWER OF #HASHTAG.

First of all, what is a Hashtag means?

-POP-2

If you are social media beginner, Hashtag can be complicated and bothersome. However, this hashtag can be a useful tool in our social media as the hash (#) sign turns into a searchable link. Hashtag also filters out the content and track conversation topics based on keywords.

According to this articleTwitter initiated the hashtag in August 2007 and now followed by other social media sites such as Instagram and Facebook. This famous hashtag trend use by users and brands to engage in conversations line and has becoming a trend use in events and campaigns. To have successful marketing campaign using a hashtag, you have to know how to pick the proper hashtag.

In this blogpost, I will show you how hashtag can be powerful in determining your campaign successfully and vice-versa that I have taken to share.

Here are few tips in making your hashtag in #nowtrending lists in social sites!

1. opt for something that is one of a kind.

As a marketer, you want to be able to reach the public using your specific unique hashtag that caters to your brand not something is simple and basic. With your unique hashtag, the public can join in on the conversation by tracking the topics based on keywords. #ftw #for #the #win

Take Verizon Wireless as an example from this article, an expert company in choosing hashtags that will make your brand stands out and recognizable. Many users in Twitter use these hashtags #verizon and #VZW when talking about Verizon Wireless and this is how Verizon Wireless reach out to their customer service and reply to them an instant.

CROPPED

Looking at Verizon Wireless’s Hashtags, the company uses clear and one of a kind that differentiate them from other companies and this is vital when you want to tell apart yourself and your social media tactics. So use something that is unique and distinct when you do your company’s marketing campaign and never use simple hashtag.  Some users might be new to the social medias and having simple and unspecific hashtags for your campaign that can be confusing. In result, it is a failure and you do not want that!

2. less is more

When opting a hashtag, it is vital to make your hashtag easy to be remember by people. So make it short yet effective hashtag  however, if you opted for long hashtag make sure your users have trouble-free to spell or pronounce, and to be able to tell their social circles to spread your hashtags around. Yay free marketing word of mouth! #win #bangforthebuck

Having long, complicated hashtag can be futile if users spell your hashtags wrongly and this defeats the purpose of creating a hashtag hype in the first place #pointless

Hashtag should be short, easy yet effective for users to find and spell. So simplicity is as its best is the key here or in other words, every girls said this metaphor always when they put their make up on, that #lessismore

-POP-5

3. do your research

This should be the first step before you show your hashtag to the world. Do your research on your chosen hashtag in every social sites  (if possible!) to see if its been utilized because the last thing you want is to have same hashtags that is already expose and used by people in social sites. What if your chosen hashtag has been used in a negative conversation? Save yourself from embarrassment to well researched is the way to go ! #wtg #awkward #embarassing #yikes

Here is some of the unfortunate ones… pretty embarrassingly hilarious and total nightmare! #funnynotsofunny

  1. #susanalbumparty

This incident happened in November 2012, and has becoming one of the top trending topics on Twitter when Susan Boyle,  one of the contestant of Britain’s Got Talent launched her new album “Standing Ovation” party. This #susanalbumparty was created by PR team with good intention of “susan-party-album”  in promoting Boyle’s new album and answer her fans questions about her new album. However, the hashtag got misread and got retweeted few times before it got deleted. Unfortunately, this hashtag has becoming one of the top search topics during that time.

On the good note, it did create a hype for Boyle, but was not sure if the album sold many copies though. Poor Boyle but damaged done! Let bygone, be bygone! #yikes #letbygonebebygone

SUSAN

2. McDstories

McDonald launched its two hashtags in 2012, one was very distinctive and a success, #meetthefarmers, and one was a failure, #McDstories. The purpose of these two hashtags is to introduce the story behind the scene of their brand. The second hashtag #McDStories got pulled in less than two hours after being expose to social sites. It is still a nightmare until today as users still posted negative tweets and hash-tagged #McDstories to share their bad experiences with McDonald. #nightmare
